The Hump 1.5 km S of Mitlenatch Island is a rock pinnacle rising from the outer exposed waters off Comox, British Columbia, with depths running from 150 to 340 feet. The structure holds a deepwater rockfish community that includes Pacific Ocean Perch, Redbanded, Silvergray, and Shortraker Rockfish, along with Sablefish drawn to the steep rock. Lingcod concentrate on the pinnacle through two windows, January to March and May to September, and respond to metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs worked over the high rock, or whole herring, live greenling, and squid fished on the bottom. Pacific Halibut move onto the deeper margins from March to July, where drift jigging with leadhead jigs and metal jigs covers ground and spreader bar rigging with whole herring or salmon heads works the flatter edges. Chinook Salmon pass through from June to August and take trolled anchovy, herring, spoons, and hootchies above the structure.
