About Cherry Point Hump

Cherry Point Hump is a rocky pinnacle in DFO subarea 18-7 off Cowichan, British Columbia, rising from mid-exposure water where depths run 260 to 660 feet. The structure holds lingcod, which peak from June through August, alongside a deepwater rockfish assemblage that includes rougheye, shortraker, and darkblotched rockfish plus sablefish. Chinook salmon move through from June into September, giving the spot two distinct fisheries across the season. Anglers work the pinnacle for lingcod by jigging swimbaits, metal jigs, or bucktail jigs over the rock, or drift live greenling and small rockfish through the same structure. Chinook are targeted with downrigger trolling using anchovy in a teaser head, hootchies, spoons, and flashers, with mooching cut-plug herring a secondary approach.
