Cowichan Bay Flats sits in DFO subarea 18-8 off Cowichan, British Columbia, a shallow feeding zone where depths run from 10 to 60 feet over open flats. Chinook Salmon hold here from June through September, followed by Coho Salmon that peak across a longer window from June into October. Downrigger trolling covers the water most effectively for Chinook, working anchovy in a teaser head, hootchies, trolling spoons, and flashers through the 10-to-60-foot range, while mooching cut-plug or whole herring targets fish holding closer to the bottom. Coho respond to trolling the same shallow band with hootchies, spoons, anchovies, and flashers, and bucktailing with bucktail flies takes fish feeding near the surface. The gradual depth transition across the flats keeps both species within reach of a single trolling pass.
