Inner Protected

Cowichan Bay Reef is an inner-protected rocky drop-off in Cowichan, British Columbia, where the bottom falls from 20 down to 120 feet. Chinook Salmon hold along this structure through their June to September peak, while Coho Salmon run strong from June into October. Downrigger trolling works the drop-off edge for Chinook, with anchovy in a teaser head, hootchies, trolling spoons, and flashers covering the depth range where fish stage against the rock. Mooching cut-plug or whole herring and jigging metal or soft plastic jigs offer close-in options over the same terrain. For Coho, trolling hootchies, spoons, anchovies, and flashers along the reef takes fish near the surface, with bucktailing flies and mooching herring as supporting approaches.
