About Russell Reef Hump

Russell Reef Hump is a rock pinnacle in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, sitting in DFO subarea 18-1 with a mid-exposure profile and depths running 40 to 120 feet. The structure holds a strong rockfish population year-round, including Quillback, Copper, Canary, and Rosy Rockfish, with Copper Rockfish taking metal jigs, leadhead jigs with soft plastics, and swimbaits worked over the rock. Lingcod peak from February through April here and respond to jigging with metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs, or to bait fishing with live greenling, whole herring, and squid along the pinnacle's edges. Chinook Salmon move through from May to August and are targeted by trolling anchovy, herring, hootchies, and trolling spoons, while Coho Salmon build from June into October and take trolling spoons, hootchies, plastic squid, and cut-plug herring. Anglers working the deeper rock down to 120 feet focus their jigging on the pinnacle's slopes where rockfish and lingcod concentrate.
