Datum Rock is an outer-exposed pinnacle rising from rocky bottom off Nanaimo, British Columbia, in DFO subarea 17-20, with depths running roughly 260 to 660 feet. The steep rock structure holds Chinook and Coho Salmon through their peak from June to September, while Lingcod stay active from March to April and again from May through August. Trolling anchovy, herring, or flashers with hoochies works the salmon over the pinnacle, and jigging metal jigs or dropping whole herring targets Lingcod tight to the rock. The deeper water and structure also produce Pacific Halibut, along with Quillback, Copper, and Black Rockfish, the latter peaking February through September and taking metal jigs and leadhead jigs with soft plastics. Drift jigging leadhead jigs or herring across the pinnacle base reaches halibut holding on the bottom.
