Middle Bank is an outer-exposed sand flat off Nanaimo, British Columbia, in DFO subarea 17-14, where the bottom runs from 120 to 180 feet. The flat holds Chinook and Coho Salmon through their peak window from June to September, alongside resident groundfish including Pacific Halibut, Pacific Cod, English Sole, Pacific Sand Dab, Ratfish, and Spiny Dogfish. Trolling anchovy, herring, flashers with hoochies, or trolling spoons covers water for Chinook across the flat, while mooching cut-plug herring and jigging metal jigs work the same depths. Coho respond to trolled spoons, hootchies, and cut-plug herring, with bucktail flies and metal jigs as alternatives. Halibut hold on the sand at 120 to 180 feet, where drift jigging with leadhead jigs and soft plastics, metal jigs, or herring reaches them, and bait fishing with whole herring, salmon bellies, octopus, or squid takes the same fish.
