The Nanaimo Harbour Bell Buoy sits off Nanaimo, British Columbia, within DFO subarea 17-14, marking water that runs 60 to 200 feet deep. Chinook Salmon hold here through the summer, with the fishing peaking from June to September, and Coho Salmon follow the same June-to-September window. Trolling dominates for both species, with anchovy, herring, flashers with hoochies, and trolling spoons working the mid-depth column for Chinook, while spoons, hootchies, and cut-plug herring cover Coho over the same range. Anglers targeting Chinook also work the deeper edges of the 60-to-200-foot band with mooching cut-plug herring or dropping metal jigs when fish sit tight to structure. The buoy itself provides a fixed reference point for setting trolling passes across the productive depth contours.
