The Sealand Waterfront public shore at the BC Ferries Nanaimo Assembly Wharf sits along the Nanaimo urban waterfront in DFO subarea 17-14, offering beach access to the surrounding tidal flats and nearshore waters. Dungeness Crab is the mainstay here, peaking from July through September, while Chinook and Coho Salmon both run strongest from June through September. Crabbers work the bottom with crab traps or ring nets baited with fish carcasses, chicken, herring, or fish heads, setting where the beach grades into deeper water. For salmon, trolling with anchovy, herring, flashers with hoochies, or trolling spoons covers water effectively, and jigging with metal jigs works well when fish hold near structure. Mooching cut-plug or whole herring gives Chinook anglers a slower presentation through moving tide.
