STRUCTURE
Kelp Reef
Outer Exposed

Snake Island Reef is an outer-exposed kelp reef off Nanaimo, British Columbia, where rock structure drops through depths of 20 to 80 feet. The reef holds Lingcod, which peak from March through April and again from May into August, alongside a year-round population of aggregate Rockfish. Chinook and Coho Salmon move through the area from June to September, drawing anglers to the exposed water above the reef. Jigging metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and soft plastic swimbaits works the rocky bottom for Lingcod and Rockfish, while trolling anchovy, herring, and flashers with hoochies covers the salmon runs. The kelp and hard structure concentrate fish along the reef edges, making drifting and bait fishing with whole herring or squid effective through the deeper margins.
