Chick Reef is an outer-exposed rock pinnacle off Port McNeill, British Columbia, rising through depths of 5 to 90 feet where current sweeps across steep structure. Lingcod hold along the rock through their peak windows in February and March, June and July, and August and September, while several rockfish species stack the pinnacle—Copper and Black Rockfish are most active from spring into fall. Pacific Halibut move onto the surrounding bottom from May through August, and Coho Salmon run the exposed water from May into September. Anglers work the pinnacle for Lingcod with metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs, or drop whole herring and squid on bait; the same jigs and leadhead-and-plastic combinations take Copper and Black Rockfish holding tight to the rock. Halibut come to drift jigging with leadhead jigs and salmon belly across the deeper edges, while Coho respond to trolled spoons, hootchies, and cut-plug herring through the upper water column.
