About Kelp Patch

Kelp Patch is an outer-exposed rock pinnacle off Port McNeill, British Columbia, rising through waters that run 40 to 120 feet deep. The structure holds a strong resident population of Lingcod, which peak from February to March, June to July, and August to September, alongside China, Blue, Copper, and Quillback Rockfish and Kelp Greenling. Anglers work the rock with jigging using metal jigs, swimbaits, or leadhead jigs for Lingcod, and drop metal jigs or leadhead jigs with soft plastics to the same broken bottom for Copper Rockfish. The pinnacle also draws Pacific Halibut from May to August, taken by drift jigging with leadhead jigs and plastic swimbaits or salmon belly across the deeper edges. Chinook Salmon (May to August) and Coho Salmon (May to September) pass through the exposed water and respond to trolling with whole herring, spoons, or flashers with hootchies.
