Sooke Basin and the Sooke Harbour Entrance form an inner, protected bay along the southern coast of Vancouver Island, with a mixed bottom and depths running 10 to 60 feet. The basin holds Dungeness Crab through two peak windows, March to June and again September to November, with crab trapping the standard approach using chicken, fish carcasses, herring, or turkey. Chinook Salmon move through the harbour entrance from June to August, worked by trolling anchovy, herring, spoons, or hootchies, with mooching cut-plug or whole herring a supporting option over the deeper mixed ground. Coho Salmon follow a longer run from June to October, taken on trolled spoons, hootchies, anchovies, and flashers, or targeted near the surface with bucktail flies. The protected water and shallow-to-moderate depths keep both crab traps and salmon gear in play across the tide.
