About Blue Gums
Blue Gums is an inner-protected mud flat in Bodega Bay, California, holding water 25 to 45 feet deep. The flat produces California Halibut through its April to August peak, alongside Striped Bass, White Seabass, Leopard Shark, Bat Ray, English Sole, and Starry Flounder across the year. Drift fishing over the soft bottom with live anchovies or live shiner perch covers ground and puts bait in front of halibut holding on the flat, while trolling and jigging work as supporting approaches. From September through January, Dungeness Crab move into the protected water, taken in crab pots or hoop nets baited with squid, mackerel, or fish carcasses. The muddy substrate and sheltered exposure keep conditions workable when outer areas turn rough.
