About Jonathan Rock
Jonathan Rock is a rocky drop-off off Crescent City, California, where the bottom falls through the 25 to 45 foot range at a mid-exposure position along the coast. The rock structure holds Lingcod, which peak from February through March and again from August through October, alongside Pacific Halibut, Shelf and Slope Rockfish, Sablefish, and Pacific Cod that come on strongest from November through January. Anglers working the Lingcod fish the structure with metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs, and back that up with live rockfish, sanddabs, or squid along the edges of the drop. Chinook Salmon move through from April into September, taking trolled anchovies, herring, spoons, and hoochies over the deeper water, with mooched whole anchovies or cut herring as an alternative. The mix of hard rock, moderate depth, and a defined drop-off keeps both bottom species and passing salmon within reach.
