San Onofre Kelp is an outer-exposed sand flat off San Diego, running from 20 to 60 feet deep. The flat holds California Halibut through their March to June peak, White Seabass from March to July, and Barred Sand Bass across the summer window of June to August, with California Sheephead and Leopard Shark filling out the warmer months. Anglers work the sand for halibut with drift fishing over the bottom, running live anchovies, live sardines, or swimbaits along the current. White Seabass respond to live bait fishing with live squid, sardine, or mackerel, while summer sand bass hold to drifting live anchovies, sardines, or squid across the flat. For Leopard Shark, soaking squid or mackerel on the bottom suits the open sand and steady exposure of this stretch.
