Moro Canyon is an outer-exposed rocky drop-off off Newport Beach, California, where the bottom falls from roughly 40 to 180 feet along broken structure. California Halibut work the shallower edges through their March-to-May peak, taken by drifting live anchovies or sardines, while Barred Sand Bass hold the same drifts from May into July on squid strips and swimbaits. Yellowtail move through from April to August and respond to live sardines and mackerel or heavy iron worked yo-yo style down the wall. As water cools, Lingcod stack on the deeper rock from September into January, where vertical jigging with heavy iron and swimbaits reaches them. Mackerel fill the mid-water column through the summer months and come readily to sabiki rigs and small feather jigs.
