About Island Freeman
Island Freeman is a sandy drop-off off Long Beach, California, where the bottom slopes through depths of 0 to 40 feet at mid-exposure. California Halibut hold along the sand from March through July, while Barred Sand Bass push through in March and again from June to August, and Calico Bass stack up from April to August. Drifting live anchovies and sardines across the drop-off works the halibut and sand bass, and swimbaits or soft plastic grubs on leadhead jigs cover the calicos over the same ground. Yellowtail move through from May to October and respond to live sardines and mackerel, with surface iron an option when they show near the top. Mackerel fill in from June through August and come readily on sabiki rigs worked through the water column.
