Island White is a sand-bottomed drop-off off Santa Monica, California, holding water from the surface down to about 40 feet with mid-range exposure. California Halibut lead the season here from March through July, worked over the sand with drift fishing using live anchovies, sardines, or smelt. Barred Sand Bass and Calico Bass follow through spring and summer, the former drifting best on live anchovies, sardines, or plastic swimbaits and the latter responding to swimbaits, soft plastic grubs, and leadhead jigs along the structure. California Sheephead run from April into September and take squid, live shrimp, and cut mackerel fished on the bottom, while Pacific Bonito move through from May to September on chummed live anchovies and sardines. As the water cools, Cabezon holds from September into April on the drop-off, taking shrimp flies, leadhead jigs with swimbaits, and squid strips down near the sand.
