About Cabrillo Beach Kelp / Angels Gate

The Los Angeles Harbor spot at Cabrillo Beach centers on the kelp and hard structure along Angels Gate, holding water from 15 to 80 feet deep. White Seabass move through from March to July and respond to live bait fishing with live squid, sardines, or mackerel, while Yellowtail follow from May to October and take live sardines and mackerel or heavy iron worked yo-yo style. Calico Bass fill the kelp edges from April to August, where plastics like swimbaits and leadhead jigs stay productive across the depth range. Pacific Halibut hold on the sand flats from February to May and come to drifting live bait such as anchovies, sardines, or smelt. California Sheephead work the rocky bottom from April to September, hooking on live shrimp, squid, or cut mackerel fished tight to structure.
