Point Fermin is an outer-exposed rocky drop-off off Long Beach, California, where the bottom falls away across a depth range of roughly 30 to 660 feet. The rock structure and steep contour hold Calico Bass and Barred Sand Bass through spring and summer, with Calico peaking March to August and Sand Bass strongest in March and again June through August. White Seabass move in from February to July, while Bonito school over the exposed water from July to September and California Halibut work the shallower margins March to June. Drift fishing with live anchovies, live sardines, or plastic swimbaits covers the Sand Bass and Halibut effectively along the sloping bottom, and plastics such as swimbaits and soft plastic jerkbaits worked into the rock produce Calico Bass. For White Seabass, live squid and live sardines fished on the drop-off are the primary approach, with Bonito responding to metal jigs and live anchovies over the same exposed structure.
