About Crystal Cove Kelp
Crystal Cove Kelp is a nearshore kelp reef off Newport Beach, California, holding structure across depths of 30 to 70 feet. White Seabass move through in spring and early summer, peaking March through July, while California Sheephead hold on the reef from April into September. Calico Bass and Barred Sand Bass fill out the warmer months, with calicos peaking April through August and sand bass strongest in March and again June through August; Ocean Whitefish join them from June to August. Anglers targeting White Seabass work live squid, live sardines, or live mackerel along the kelp edges, while Sheephead come to bottom fishing with live shrimp, squid, cut mackerel, or crab against the rocky structure. For the bass, plastics such as swimbaits and soft plastic grubs cover the calicos, and drift fishing with live anchovies, live sardines, or plastic swimbaits works the sand flats between the reef and open bottom.
