Newport Submarine Canyon is a deepwater feature off Oceanside, California, where the seafloor drops into the 240- to 340-foot range and draws migratory pelagics to its edges. Albacore and yellowfin tuna both peak from June through October, while bluefin tuna run strongest from May through September, with bigeye, opah, bonito, and blue and mako sharks moving through the same waters. Anglers target bluefin here with kite fishing using flying fish, live mackerel, and yummy flyer lures, backed by live bait and jigging with flat-fall and metal jigs over the deeper water. Yellowfin respond to live bait fishing with sardines, anchovies, and mackerel, along with trolling cedar plugs and feathers across the canyon's productive margins. Albacore hold to trolling with feathers and cedar plugs, and shift to live sardines or surface iron when fish stack up on the surface.
