La Jolla Canyon is a deep offshore feature off Oceanside, California, dropping through depths of 580 to 910 feet where cold upwelling and steep structure concentrate pelagic gamefish. Bluefin tuna hold from May through September, while albacore and yellowfin tuna peak June through October, and swordfish move through June into November. Bluefin respond to kite fishing with flying fish, live mackerel, and yummy flyer lures, backed by live bait fishing with sardines, mackerel, and anchovies over the canyon edges. Yellowfin come to live sardines, anchovies, and mackerel, with trolling cedar plugs and feathers working the surface schools, and albacore fall to trolled feathers and cedar plugs along the temperature breaks. For swordfish, deep-drop daytime rigs with squid, mackerel, or bonito strips reach the fish holding along the canyon's deeper contours.
