About Mission Bay Mouth / Bell Buoy
Mission Bay Mouth / Bell Buoy marks the channel where Mission Bay meets the open Pacific off San Diego, holding water from 20 to 60 feet over a mix of sand and current-swept structure near the buoy. California Halibut anchor the spring fishery here, peaking March through June and taken by drifting live anchovies, live sardines, or swimbaits across the sandy bottom on moving tide. White Seabass follow a similar March-to-July window and respond to live squid, live sardine, or live mackerel worked through the deeper edges. Summer brings California Barracuda from April through September, best trolled with diving plugs, feathers, or spoons, alongside Pacific Bonito from June through August on live anchovies and sardines. Yellowtail push through July into September and take live sardines, mackerel, or anchovies when they move onto the structure, while Leopard Shark hold on the bottom June through September for squid and mackerel soaked near the channel.
