About Butcherpen Cove
Butcherpen Cove is a protected bay cove near Pensacola, Florida, with a sand bottom that runs 5 to 15 feet deep in sheltered inner waters. Red Drum peak here in September and October and respond to inshore casting with gold spoons, jigheads with paddletails, and topwater plugs worked across the sand flats. Sheepshead take over from January through March, when bottom fishing with fiddler crabs, live shrimp, or sand fleas puts baits in front of feeding fish. Gray Snapper hold in the cove from May through August and take live shrimp or live pinfish fished on the bottom. Spanish Mackerel run from April through October and hit small spoons and gotcha plugs cast into surface activity, while Common Snook round out the cove's inshore lineup.
