About Palmetto Point
Palmetto Point is a sand-bottom drop-off in the Tampa Bay region near Sarasota, Florida, where the bottom falls from 15 to 45 feet in moderately exposed water. Common Snook peak here from May through July, Gray Snapper from June through August, and Red Drum from September through October, while Spanish Mackerel run in two windows, March through May and September through November, and Sheepshead round out the lineup. Snook anglers work the edge of the drop with live pilchards, live pinfish, or live threadfin herring, and switch to paddletail swimbaits or bucktail jigs to cover more of the slope. Gray Snapper respond to bottom fishing along the deeper sand with live shrimp, cut sardines, or squid, and chumming with frozen chum blocks holds them near the boat. Spanish Mackerel push over the shallower lip of the drop, where casting small spoons and jigs or trolling plugs draws strikes from fast-moving schools.
