About West Egmont Channel Hump
West Egmont Channel Hump is a rocky pinnacle rising from 25 to 45 feet of water in the outer, exposed Gulf waters of the Tampa Bay Region off Sarasota, Florida. Common Snook peak here from May through July, Gray Snapper from June through August, and Red Drum in September and October, while Sheepshead hold on the rock as well. Spanish Mackerel pass through in two waves, from March to May and again from September to November, and anglers target them by casting small spoons, jigs, and plugs over the hump. Bottom fishing with live shrimp, live pilchards, cut sardines, or squid tight to the rock produces Gray Snapper, and chumming with live pilchards or frozen chum blocks draws them up off the structure. Snook respond to live pilchards, live pinfish, and live threadfin herring drifted along the pinnacle's edges, with bucktail jigs and flare hook jigs working the deeper rock.
