About St. Pete Beach Reef
St. Pete Beach Reef is an artificial reef in the Gulf of Mexico off St. Petersburg, Florida, within the Tampa Bay Region of Florida's Gulf state waters. The structure holds bottom species through the cooler months, with Gag Grouper peaking from October through December and Sheepshead from January through March, while Gray Snapper take over from May through August. Bottom fishing is the dominant approach for all three, with live pinfish and live grunts for grouper, live fiddler crabs and sand fleas for sheepshead, and live shrimp or knocker rigs for snapper. Pelagic traffic over the reef builds in spring and fall, when King Mackerel peak March through May and August through October, Spanish Mackerel March through May and September through October, and Cobia March through April and September through October. Anglers slow troll live threadfin herring or live blue runners for kings, cast small spoons and metal jigs to Spanish mackerel, and sight cast live crabs or bucktail jigs to cobia cruising the structure.
