About Conception Key Hump
Conception Key Hump is a rock pinnacle off St. Petersburg in the Florida Gulf State Waters of the Tampa Bay Region, rising from exposed outer water with depths running 45 to 85 feet. Gray Snapper hold tight to the rock and peak from May through August, while Sheepshead take over the structure from January through March. Spanish Mackerel pass through in spring and fall, peaking March through May and again September through October, and Red Drum show in August and September, with Common Snook from April through June and Spotted Seatrout in March–April and October–November rounding out the species list. Bottom fishing with live shrimp, live pilchards, or knocker rigs works the snapper along the pinnacle's flanks, and live fiddler crabs or sand fleas dropped to the rock target Sheepshead. When mackerel crowd the surface over the hump, anglers cast small spoons and metal jigs or troll small trolling spoons and diving plugs across the high spot.
