About Indian Shores Reef
Indian Shores Reef is an artificial reef in federal Gulf waters west of St. Petersburg, Florida, where placed structure on the bottom holds both reef fish and pelagics. Red Snapper peak from May through July, and Gray Snapper run strongest from May through August, with bottom fishing the dominant approach for both, using cut bait, live pinfish, and frozen sardines for Red Snapper and live shrimp, live pilchards, and knocker rigs for Gray Snapper. Gag Grouper and Red Grouper peak from October through December and respond to bottom fishing with live pinfish, frozen sardines, and cut bait, while jigging with bucktail jigs and metal jigs works the reef structure for both grouper species. Greater Amberjack peak in March and April and take live blue runners, live pinfish, and live threadfin herring, with vertical jigging using butterfly jigs and knife jigs as a supporting method. King Mackerel move through from March to May and again from August to October, and anglers slow troll live threadfin herring, live scaled sardines, and live blue runners around the reef.
