About Madeira Reef

Madeira Reef is an artificial reef in the Gulf of Mexico off St. Petersburg, Florida, within the Tampa Bay region's state waters. Sheepshead lead the winter action from January through March, followed by cobia in March–April and again in September–October. King mackerel and Spanish mackerel run the reef in spring and again from late summer into fall. Gray snapper peak from May through August, and gag grouper take over from October through December. Bottom fishing with live shrimp or live fiddler crabs works for sheepshead and snapper tight to the structure, while slow trolling live threadfin herring or scaled sardines around the reef's edges draws strikes from king mackerel.
