About Mullet Key Shoal Hump
Mullet Key Shoal Hump is a sand-bottom pinnacle rising from 15 to 35 feet of water on the exposed outer edge of the Tampa Bay Region off St. Petersburg, Florida. Gray Snapper hold on the hump from May through August, and anglers target them with bottom fishing using live shrimp, live pilchards, cut bait, and knocker rigs, often backed by chumming with frozen chum blocks or cut sardines. Sheepshead move onto the structure from January through March and take live fiddler crabs, sand fleas, and live shrimp fished tight to the bottom. Spanish Mackerel push across the hump in March through May and again in September and October, when casting small spoons, metal jigs, and bucktail jigs draws strikes from fast-moving schools. Spotted Seatrout peak in March–April and October–November, Common Snook in April through June, and Red Drum in August and September, with live bait fishing using live shrimp, live pilchards, and live scaled sardines producing across all three.
