About Pinellas II Reef
Pinellas II Reef is an artificial reef in federal Gulf waters west of St. Petersburg, Florida, where placed structure holds both bottom-dwelling reef fish and roaming pelagics. Red Snapper peak from May through July and Gray Snapper from May through August, and bottom fishing with cut bait, live pinfish, live shrimp, or frozen sardines works the base of the structure for both. Gag Grouper and Red Grouper move onto the reef from October through December and respond to live pinfish, live grunts, and whole or cut squid fished tight to the bottom, with bucktail jigs and metal jigs as a jigging alternative. Greater Amberjack peak in March and April and take live blue runners and live threadfin herring dropped over the reef, while vertical jigging with butterfly jigs and knife jigs also draws strikes. King Mackerel pass through from March through May and again from August through October, and slow trolling live threadfin herring or live scaled sardines along the edges of the structure targets them.
