About Pinellas South Reef
Pinellas South Reef is an artificial reef in the federal Gulf waters off St. Petersburg, Florida, where placed structure on the bottom draws both reef-dwelling and pelagic species. Gag Grouper and Red Grouper peak from October through December, and anglers target them by bottom fishing with live pinfish, frozen sardines, or cut bait worked tight to the structure. Red Snapper peak from May through July and Gray Snapper from May through August, with bottom fishing as the dominant approach and chumming with live pilchards or cut sardines pulling Gray Snapper up off the reef. King Mackerel run strongest from March through May and again from August through October, when slow trolling live threadfin herring, scaled sardines, or blue runners around the reef's edges produces strikes. Greater Amberjack peak in March and April, holding over the structure where live blue runners and vertical jigging with butterfly jigs or knife jigs connect with them.
