About Rube Allyn Reef
Rube Allyn Reef is an artificial reef in federal Gulf waters west of St. Petersburg, Florida, where placed structure holds bottom fish and draws pelagic predators. Red Grouper and Gag Grouper peak from October through December, and bottom fishing with live pinfish, frozen sardines, or whole or cut squid accounts for most of the grouper caught over the structure. Red Snapper peak from May through July and Gray Snapper from May through August, with cut bait and live pinfish on the bottom for Red Snapper and live shrimp or live pilchards for Gray Snapper, often paired with chumming to pull fish up off the reef. Greater Amberjack run strongest in March and April and respond to live blue runners or live grunts dropped near the structure, with butterfly jigs as a vertical jigging alternative. King Mackerel move through from March through May and again from August through October, and slow trolling live threadfin herring or live scaled sardines along the reef edges covers the water where they feed.
