About Saint Barbe Key Hump
Saint Barbe Key Hump is a rocky pinnacle rising from 45 to 75 feet of water in the exposed outer reaches of the Tampa Bay region off St. Petersburg, Florida. Gray Snapper hold tight to the rock from May through August, while Sheepshead stack on the structure from January through March. Bottom fishing with live shrimp, live pilchards, or knocker rigs puts baits directly on the hump for snapper, and chumming with frozen chum blocks or cut sardines pulls fish up off the rock. Sheepshead respond to live fiddler crabs, sand fleas, and shrimp-tipped jigs worked along the pinnacle's edges. Spanish Mackerel push through in March through May and again in September and October, when casting small spoons and metal jigs or trolling feathers over the hump draws strikes. Red Drum, Common Snook, and Spotted Seatrout round out the seasonal mix.
