About Barr's Reef
Barr's Reef is an artificial reef in federal Gulf waters off Galveston, Texas, where placed structure on the seafloor concentrates both bottom-dwelling and pelagic species. Red Snapper anchor the fishery here and peak from April through August, while King Mackerel run the water column from April through October. Bottom fishing with cut bait, squid, live bait, or cigar minnows is the dominant approach for Red Snapper over the reef structure, and vertical jigging with metal jigs, butterfly jigs, or bucktail jigs works the same fish higher off the bottom. For King Mackerel, trolling stinger-rigged ribbonfish, diving plugs, or trolling spoons around the reef covers ground, and slow trolling live menhaden or live blue runners targets fish holding near the structure. Cobia, Gray Triggerfish, and Greater Amberjack round out the species mix around the reef.
