About Fort Point
Fort Point is a mud-bottom drop-off on the protected inner waters of the Galveston Bay System, where the bottom falls away into 25 to 45 feet of water just off Galveston. Spotted seatrout peak here from March through May and respond to live shrimp or live croaker fished under popping cork rigs, along with soft plastic paddle tails worked on jig heads along the ledge. Sheepshead and black drum both peak from January through March, holding tight to the mud edge where bottom fishing with live shrimp, fiddler crabs, or fresh dead shrimp produces steady bites. Red drum move through from August to October and take live finger mullet and cut mullet on a drift down the slope. Southern flounder follow in September through November, settling along the base of the drop-off where jigging soft plastic paddle tails or shrimp-tipped jigs along the bottom puts baits directly in their path.
