About Mitchell's Reef
Mitchell's Reef is an artificial reef in the federal Gulf waters off Galveston, Texas, where submerged structure draws both bottom-dwelling and pelagic species. Red Snapper hold tight to the reef and peak from April through August. King Mackerel patrol the surrounding water with a longer peak running April through October. Bottom fishing with cut bait, squid, live bait, or cigar minnows is the dominant approach for snapper, and vertical jigging with metal, butterfly, or bucktail jigs works the same structure from above. Kings respond to trolled stinger-rigged ribbonfish, diving plugs, and trolling spoons, as well as slow-trolled live menhaden and blue runners. The reef also holds Cobia, Greater Amberjack, and Gray Triggerfish.
