About West Beach
West Beach stretches along the Gulf-facing shoreline of Galveston Island's western end, a sandy surf beach in Texas Gulf State Waters. Spanish Mackerel run this beach from April through October, and anglers target them by casting small metal spoons, diamond jigs, and bucktail jigs into the surf. Spotted Seatrout peak from March through May and respond to live shrimp and live croaker fished under popping cork rigs, with soft plastic paddle tails on jig heads as a reliable alternative. Red Drum move through from August to October, when drift fishing with live shrimp, live finger mullet, or cut mullet produces steady action. Southern Flounder close out the season from September through November, and anglers work soft plastic paddle tails and shrimp-tipped jigs slowly along the sandy bottom.
