Outer Exposed

Cypress Head is an outer-exposed kelp reef off Bellingham, Washington, in DFO subarea 7, where rocky bottom rises through depths of 20 to 80 feet. The reef holds Pacific Halibut from April through August and a strong Lingcod run that peaks November through February and again March through June, alongside Black Rockfish that concentrate from June to August. Chinook Salmon move through the area from June to September, with Coho following June through October. Anglers drift herring, squid, or salmon bellies over the deeper edges for halibut, while jigging leadhead swimbaits and metal jigs works the rock structure for lingcod and rockfish. Downrigger trolling with whole herring, spoons, and flashers covers the salmon over the outer contours.
