Shilshole / Golden Gardens Reef is an outer-exposed kelp reef off Seattle, built over rock structure that drops from 15 to 60 feet. The reef holds lingcod, which peak in January and again from February through April, alongside resident cabezon and aggregate rockfish. Lingcod respond best to jigging over the rock with metal jigs, leadhead jigs paired with swimbaits, or bucktail jigs, while live greenling and herring fished on the structure draw the larger fish. Rockfish stack along the same reef edges and take metal jigs, leadhead jigs, swimbaits, and shrimp flies worked through the water column. The kelp and broken rock concentrate fish along the exposed margins, so working the jig close to structure produces the most consistent contact.
