Inner Protected

Poverty Bay is an inner, protected bay on the Tacoma shoreline of Washington, sitting at roughly 47.3500, -122.3600. Its bottom is predominantly mud, and depths across the bay range from about 20 to 120 feet. The sheltered setting keeps the water calm relative to the open sound, and the soft-bottom flats give way gradually to deeper holding water. Tidal movement drives the exchange through the bay, shifting fish across the mud and along the depth transitions. The protected exposure makes the bay a consistent, workable stretch of water throughout the season.
