Thompson Split is an inner-protected sand flat in Tacoma, Washington, part of DFO subarea 13, with depths running 15 to 40 feet. The flat holds Pacific Halibut from March through August and Lingcod from March through June, while Chinook Salmon move through from June to September and Coho Salmon follow from July into October. Dungeness Crab work the sandy bottom in two windows, April through June and again in August and September. Anglers targeting halibut drift jig with leadhead jigs and swimbaits, herring, or squid across the flat, and the same water rewards lingcod on metal or leadhead jigs and soft plastic swimbaits. Salmon here respond to trolling with cut-plug herring, flashers, and spoons, while crabbers set pots baited with fish carcasses or squid over the open sand.
