STRUCTURE

Inner Protected

The east side of Vashon Island marks the approach to Quartermaster Harbor, an inner protected bay near Tacoma, Washington, defined by soft mud bottom and depths running from 10 to 60 feet. The sheltered water holds aggregate rockfish, which peak from April through September. Vertical jigging dominates here, with leadhead jigs paired with swimbaits, metal jigs, or shrimp flies worked down through the water column over the muddy flats. Mooching with cut or whole herring supports the approach when fish sit tighter to structure. The protected exposure keeps conditions workable across the shallow-to-moderate depth range typical of this stretch.
