Point Loma Whistler Buoy marks a mixed rocky bottom on the outer exposed coast, with fishable structure running from 50 to 130 feet. California Halibut anchor the spring effort from March through June, followed by Barred Sand Bass from May through August, Sculpin from June through September, and Calico Bass peaking through June and July. Drift fishing with live anchovies, live sardines, or swimbaits covers the sand channels between rock for halibut and sand bass, while paddle-tail swimbaits on leadhead jigs worked through the structure handle the calico bite. Deeper rock edges along the 100-plus-foot contour produce sculpin on a dropper loop baited with squid or mackerel strips. The exposed setting concentrates current along the rock margins, and drifts work best when the boat tracks across rather than along the contour.
