Outer Exposed

Bird Rock is an exposed rocky pinnacle off Nanaimo in DFO subarea 17-6, rising through water that runs 40 to 120 feet deep. The structure holds lingcod, which peak from March into April and again through May to August, alongside black rockfish that stay active from February through September and a mix of copper, quillback, china, and canary rockfish. Anglers work the pinnacle for lingcod with metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs, or fish whole herring, live greenling, and squid along the rock. Black rockfish come to jigging with metal jigs and leadhead jigs dressed with soft plastics, with herring or anchovy on bait as a supporting approach. Coho and Chinook salmon move through from June to September and are taken by trolling flashers, spoons, hootchies, and cut-plug herring over the exposed outer edge.
