Black Rock is an outer-exposed rocky pinnacle off Nanaimo in DFO subarea 17-3, rising through a depth range of roughly 0 to 185 feet. The structure holds a dense rockfish population, with Black Rockfish peaking February through September alongside Blue, China, and Copper Rockfish, Kelp Greenling, and Cabezon. Lingcod feed hard over the same rock through spring and summer, peaking March–April and again May–August, and respond well to jigging with metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs, or to bait fishing with whole herring, live greenling, and squid. Coho and Chinook Salmon move through from June to September, both taken by trolling flashers with trolling spoons, hootchies, or cut-plug herring. The pinnacle's vertical relief lets anglers work jigs and drifted swimbaits down through the water column to reach fish stacked along the rock.
