Outer Exposed

Collins Shoal is an outer-exposed rock pinnacle off Nanaimo in DFO subarea 17-5, rising through depths of roughly 60 to 180 feet. The structure holds Chinook and Coho Salmon through their summer peak from June to September, while Lingcod and Black Rockfish work the rock year-round, with Lingcod strongest from March into August and Black Rockfish active February through September. Trollers cover the salmon here with anchovy, herring, or flashers with hoochies, and mooching cut-plug herring works the same water. Over the pinnacle itself, jigging with metal jigs, swimbaits, or leadhead jigs takes Lingcod and Black Rockfish tight to the rock. The deeper edges hold Pacific Halibut, targeted by drift jigging leadhead jigs and herring across the bottom.
